LIVING A LIFE OF DEEP SECRECY – Episode 5

Chief Agu: “You are welcome to my house. What can we do for you?”

Justina: “Sir, I…”

Mama Justina: “Shhhh. Keep quiet there. I will do the talking”. Turning to Chief, “My daughter here is pregnant for your son and that is why we have come to inform you so that you can start the process of traditional marriage “.

Chief Agu: “I beg your pardon, madam. Which son are you talking about here? I have only one son and he lives in US. So, how is it possible that your daughter is pregnant for him? “

Mama Justina: “My daughter told me that your son is the only man that she knows, he is responsible for her pregnancy”. She turned to her daughter and clapped her hand on her face. “My friend, will you say something or have you suddenly gone deaf and dumb?”

Justina: “Yes, sir. My mother is right, your son promised to marry me and got me pregnant. We met when he came back for Christmas break. Jennifer knows about us “.

Chief Agu: “You mean of all the white girls abroad my son didn’t see any to make pregnant except you? How did this thing happen under my nose that I don’t know about?” He called Jennifer who was behind the door eavesdropping on their conversation. “Do you know this girl?” He asked her.

Jennifer: “Yes, daddy. I used to see her around in the village”.

Chief Agu: “She said she is pregnant for your brother and that you know about it. What do you have to say about that? “.

Jennifer: “Justina! Why are you lying? Of course you know that is not true, you know that the owner of your pregnancy is that your carpenter boyfriend, don’t even think of setting my brother up. Don’t you ever call my name in your lies again”.

Justina stares at Jennifer in disbelief. “Jennifer!”

Chief Agu: “Keep quiet there. My son returned to the States after the Christmas holidays and you are here saying rubbish. So, you think you can just manoeuvre your way into this family like that? Oh, I see that you are an opportunist trying to reap from where you didn’t sow.”

Justina who is in tears got on her knees and began to plead. “I am saying the truth, sir. Your son is responsible for my pregnancy”.

Chief Agu: “Okay. For the sake of clarity, I am going to call my son on phone so that we can hear from the horse’s mouth. He brought out his phone and dialed Nonso’s number.

Nonso: “What’s up, dad. I was just about calling you. How’s Nigeria?”

Chief Agu: “Everything is fine. There is a situation here that involves you. One Justina girl said she is pregnant for you. Is it true? Do you know her or not?”

Nonso: “Of course it’s a lie, dad. How can she even think of saying that? Yes, I know her and I met her once or twice but that is where it ended, it was purely a fling and I paid her at the end of the day. We never had anything serious”.

Chief Agu: “Are you sure?”

Nonso: “Listen, pop. You gat to believe me mehn. I can’t condescend so low as to getting a local village girl pregnant. I am sure she’s trying to blackmail me. I need you to chase them outta the house before I take the next available flight back to Nigeria and do that myself”.

Chief Agu: “It’s okay, my son. I will handle it”. He ended the call. “Did you hear him? He said he is not responsible for your pregnancy. Now leave my house before I order the security man to throw you out”.

Justina and her mother were pushed out of the compound by the security man.

Justina’s Mother: “Stupid girl. Have you seen what you have caused for yourself? Stay away from men, you won’t listen. Now see, no man wants to accept your pregnancy. You better pray that your carpenter boyfriend accepts the pregnancy, else you will see what I will do to you. Nonsense!”

Justina: “You don’t have to blame me, mama. I did everything I did because of you all. If you had planned well for the future of your children, I wouldn’t have been in the situation that I am in today. Do you know how it hurts to know that your mates are in higher institution while you have to remain at home because your parents have no money to sponsor you? For how long do we have to endure hunger before I…”

Justina’s Mother: “Shut up your dirty mouth there. Are you trying to give excuses for your waywardness? Are we the only poor parents in the world? How come other children didn’t take the path that you took? If I hear a word from you there again, I won’t mind that you are an adult, I will beat the devil out of you here and now. Nonsense!”

Justina in tears leads the way to Achema’s house.

Justina and her mother got to Achema’s house and they met him drinking garri and groundnuts with a sachet of cold water beside him.

Achema: “You are welcome, ma. Please make yourself comfortable. Justina, I wasn’t expecting you, I hope all is well?”

Mama Justina: “Make myself comfortable where? Where are the chairs? How can one be comfortable in this small room that looks like where local chickens are kept?”

Achema: “I am sorry, ma. I am struggling to stand on my feet. I know that things will get better with time by God’s grace”.

Mama Justina: “Justina, so this is the poor Church rat that you are pregnant for? Ehn, this thing that doesn’t even have a good house? So, you are still not wise despite all the sufferings that we are going through? You want to make the same mistake that I made by marrying a poor man? Do you want to end up like me?”

Achema stared at them in utter confusion. “What! You are pregnant? “

Mama Justina: “Keep quiet there and stop pretending you cursed poor thing. So this is your plan ehn, you got my daughter pregnant so that you can get someone to share in your poverty right? You lie”.

Achema: “Justina, who is responsible for your pregnancy?”

Justina: “What kind of a stupid question is that? Of course you are. You are the only man that I have ever known”.

Mama Justina: So, when you dey jack that your small waist up and down on my daughter’s crotch, you no know abi? You must accept this pregnancy this minute or something thunderous is about to happen to you
