Late evening. The same wooden bench by the lake where they often sit. The sky is soft orange fading into purple.
John Adewale sits beside Amara Okoye, but something feels different.
He is unusually quiet.
Amara notices first.
She studies his face.
He is staring at the water, lost in thought.
The breeze moves her hair gently across her face.
She turns toward him.π£ Amara: βYouβve been quiet all evening.β
John forces a small smile.
π£ John: βHave I?β
π£ Amara: βYes. And when youβre quiet like this, it means youβre carrying something.β
He exhales slowly.
π£ John: βAmaraβ¦ youβve been thinking Iβm taking too long.β
She freezes slightly.
π£ Amara: βSo you noticed.β
π£ John: βHow could I not? I know you feel like Iβm delaying marriage.β
She looks down at her hands.
π£ Amara: βI just donβt want us to keep waiting until waiting becomes our story.β
John nods slowly.
Then his tone changes.
π£ John: βIf that was the only issueβ¦ it would be easier.β
She looks up immediately.
π£ Amara: βWhat do you mean?β
There is a pause.
A long one.
π£ John (quietly): βI got a job offer.β
She blinks.
π£ Amara: βThatβs good, isnβt it?β
He swallows.
π£ John: βItβs in the United States.β
Silence.
The wind feels colder.Sometimes, silence speaks louder than confession.
In that moment, Amara felt the ground shift beneath her feet.
It was not just distance he was announcing.
It was uncertainty.Β The Breaking Point
Amara stands slowly.
Her eyes begin to water.
π£ Amara (barely above a whisper): βI always knew.β
π£ John: βKnew what?β
π£ Amara: βThat something would come between us.β
π£ John: βThis isnβt about leaving you.β
π£ Amara: βIt always starts like that.β
He stands quickly.
π£ John: βAmara, listen to me.β
But she steps back.
π£ Amara: βFirst itβs βI need time.β Now itβs βI need to travel.β Whatβs next, John?β
π£ John: βThis job can secure our future.β
π£ Amara: βOr replace me.β
That hits him.
She turns and walks away.
John calls after her.
π£ John: βAmara!β
She doesnβt stop.Love does not always end in betrayal.
Sometimes, it trembles under opportunity.
And opportunity can look like abandonment when fear is already present. The Calls
That night.
John sits in his room staring at his phone.
He calls.
Phone ringingβ¦
Amaraβs phone lights up on her bed.
She sees his name: John Callingβ¦
She rejects it.
He calls again.
Rejected.
Again.
Rejected.
Days pass.
Short montage:
β’ John texting: βPlease letβs talk.β
β’ No reply.
β’ Missed calls.
β’ Amara reading messages but not responding.
John looks exhausted.
Amara looks conflicted. She was not angry.
She was afraid.
And sometimes fear chooses silence as protection. The Text
Three days later.
Johnβs phone vibrates.
Message from Amara:
βI’m not angry.
I am only afraid.
I have an idea.
Meet me tomorrow.
Under the tree where we last met.β
John exhales deeply.
Hope.
Fear.
Confusion.
All at once. When love is wounded, it does not always disappear.
Sometimes it searches for a solution.Β Under the Tree
Next day.
The large tree near the lake.
The same place they once laughed and dreamed.
Amara is already there.
Standing.
Calm.
Composed.
John approaches slowly.
π£ John: βAmaraβ¦β
π£ Amara: βI wonβt stop you from going.β
He looks surprised.
π£ John: βWhat?β
π£ Amara: βIβm not selfish. I know this job could prepare a better future for us.β
John steps closer.
π£ John: βThen why did you walk away?β
She looks at him directly.
π£ Amara: βBecause distance changes people.β
She pauses.
π£ Amara: βYouβll meet new women. New friends. New life. And one day, you may not feel the same.β
π£ John: βThat will never happen.β
She studies him carefully.
π£ Amara: βThen prove it.β
He frowns slightly.
π£ John: βHow?β
She reaches into her bag slowly.
π£ Amara: βLetβs make an oath.β
John freezes.
π£ John: βAn oath?β
π£ Amara: βA promise sealed. So no matter where you goβ¦ you wonβt marry another woman. Youβll come back for me.β
He stares at her.
Shock.
Concern.
Confusion.
The wind moves between them.Fear had now found a voice.
Not in accusation.
Not in anger.
But in a demand for proof.
Love wanted assurance.
But assurance, when forced, can awaken consequences no one expects.
Under that tree, their love was about to cross a line neither of them fully understood.Scripture Reflection β Episode 2
βHope deferred makes the heart sick, but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life.β β Proverbs 13:12
